Shopping for Mother's Day / The Cranky Consumer By
EILEEN P. GUNN
Special to THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
May 3, 2005; Page D7
"This Mother's
Day, retailers are pushing an array of offbeat and customized
presents, offering everything from flowers stamped with Mom's
picture to "bouquets" made from cookies and fruit....
.....In our quest to find a gift as cool as Mom, we tried five Web sites
and one real-world group of stores that are updating Mother's Day
staples like flowers, jewelry and stationery. We tested them
to see how easy the ordering and customization processes were, the
timeliness of the delivery, and how closely the actual products
resembled their online facsimiles..... .....For jewelry, we tried CuddleBabies, a home-based business in Jacksonville, Fla. that turns
out about 4,000 custom items a year. We chose a watch with
children's names worked into the watchband's four strands of beads.
We provided three names, Caitlin, Connor, and Kieran, to test the
company's spelling ability. While we were a little worried that the
watch would look too arts-and-craftsy, the silver beads were
surprisingly stylish.
COMPANY: Cuddle Babies www.cuddlebabies.com
ITEM: Watch with children's names printed on the beaded strap
PRICE: $64 plus $14.50 for express shipping
DELIVERY: We requested a rush order to meet our deadline -- and it
arrived a day early.
COMMENT: The bracelet clasp didn't allow for easy adjustments.
